Robert Louis Stevenson

A gentle man of fortune is used to describe Captain Flint in the book"Treasure Island." This statement came from the brilliant mind of Robert LouisStevenson and basically describes the man and his life. Robert Louis Stevenson was born on November 13, 1850. Stevensonspent his childhood like no others. He took many voyages with his father as achild and as he grew older he witnessed. The 1800's was a time of peace inBritain, although high crimes and piracy still existed. Both "Treasure Island"and "Jekyll and Hyde" are reflective of his voyages and the society of the Robert Louis Stevenson lived much of his childhood in a beautifulcountry home. Stevenson's childhood and later life with his family affected hisworks. Stevenson's father, Thomas, was a so of Robert Stevenson, founder ofthe family of lighthouse engineers who built Skerryvore, Bell Rock, and otherfamous towers around the rocky coast of Scotland. His mother was Margaret,youngest daughter of Reverend Lewis Balfour, minister at Colinton. Stevensonwas a delicate only child adored by his parents and "Cummie," his devoted


These foundations were connected by a solid foreign trade. Bristol is an actual seaport located in western England at the mouth ofthe Avon River. These were friends that were other writers and they, in turn,encouraged Stevenson into a career writing. After dropping out of Edinburgh University, Stevenson found friends ofthe same kind in London. The town supplied many "privateers" with ships and menduring the 1700's. Stevenson's father was one of the strongest figures in his life. Treasure Island takes place in the 1700's. He was always an easy target for the common illness. His grandfather, who performed the same job as his father,would also take him on many outings. He came to this conclusion while attendingengineering school. He found his friends when he joined the SavilleClub, in 1874. Even though this group had been suppressed inthe early 1850's, still in 1851 the British Navy ships patrolled the area to makesure piracy was controlled. On the eastern seas, people manning British naval posts battledChinese pirates near the borders of India. He decided to develop his natural talent for speech andwriting. Cummie entertained her charge with a spark for imagination.
