Who's To Blame?

In past decades, society did not influence teen suicide attempts as much as it does today. Teens today are pressured by the media such as television, music, and other factors to act in a certain way to be accepted into the society. Young adults are lead to believe that sexual behaviors, drug and alcohol use and other dangerous behaviors are okay because they are portrayed as if they were through our media. This is a tough time in an adolescent's life, the need to feel as if they fit in or meet up to society's measures of what is right, they may feel as if suicide is a simple way out. According to Kienhorst, "Depression, hopelessness, excessive drug or alcohol use, and adverse factors in a family's environment are all signs of a suicide attempt" (Quoted in Martin). An adolescent's preference of music may also play a role in his or her suicide. Many types of music, from country to heavy metal, have been linked to teen suicide (Scheel). Not only have these types of music been blamed, but also artist such as Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne's group, Black Sabbath, have been sued for the suicides of few teens (Scheel). More recent artist such as Blink 182 and Madonna have also be linked to teen's reasons for suicide (Herbert). T

Though Jay had survived his suicide attempt, he died only three years later of an overdose of the drugs prescribed to him due to his injuries from the attempt. After the viewing of the show, researchers asked 160 hospitals to ask their overdosed patients about their T. Many believe that media does not play an effective role on teen suicide. S adolescents that listen to heavy metal music are found to be a more extreme group, with more pronounced negative characteristics" (Quoted in Scheel). Then only a few minutes later both of them jumped out the window of the house with a sawed-off shotgun, and ran towards the deserted church playground behind Ray's home. More recent artist such as Blink 182 and Madonna have also be linked to teen's reasons for suicide (Herbert). There is a common concern that certain media coverage may act as a channel to teen suicide. Yes, though this is an art to the musician they must also take in consideration the admiration that their fans have for them, and that some fans will go to great extents to feel close to their favorite artist or band. They had been listening to the song "Beyond the Realms of Death", Jay then claims that, "All of a sudden we got a suicide message, and we got tired of life" that was when they made their suicide pact (Quoted in Billard). Listeners of music must realize that they should not take lyrics written by their favorite artist to seriously. Cloud and Shaffer found that the completion of suicide before the movies aired was 1. Not only have lyrics given teenagers the drive to commit suicide, but also now evidence is shown that also music videos can be linked the cause of teen suicides. The media has such a wide coverage on suicide in such programs such as fictional movies, news broadcasts, and drama like television shows, which these programs may be seen as a trigger to those who are thinking about taking their lives.
