Who's To Blame?
In past decades, society did not influence teen suicide attempts as much as it does today. Teens today are pressured by the media such as television, music, and other factors to act in a certain way to be accepted into the society. Young adults are lead to believe that sexual behaviors, drug and alcohol use and other dangerous behaviors are okay because they are portrayed as if they were through our media. This is a tough time in an adolescent's life, the need to feel as if they fit in or meet up to society's measures of what is right, they may feel as if suicide is a simple way out. According to Kienhorst, "Depression, hopelessness, excessive drug or alcohol use, and adverse factors in a family's environment are all signs of a suicide attempt" (Quoted in Martin). An adolescent's preference of music may also play a role in his or her suicide. Many types of music, from country to heavy metal, have been linked to teen suicide (Scheel). Not only have these types of music been blamed, but also artist such as Judas Priest and Ozzy Osbourne's group, Black Sabbath, have been sued for the suicides of few teens (Scheel). More recent artist such as Blink 182 and Madonna have also be linked to teen's reasons for suicide (Herbert). T
For instance to hear what Blink 182 sings, may trigger the feelings that someone is feeling, believing that loved ones might not love him and may not miss him when truly gone. This is how all listeners should feel when listening to music. " is what was found in Jay's letter (Quoted in Billard). The "tube" has been perceived as a primary cause of teen suicide. Though, at the same time Madonna must realize that young teenage girls look up to her and dictate what they see her perform on music videos. Children and young adults are naive, and believe what they see appear on T. "I'd never thought I'd die alone Another six months I'll be unknown Give all my things to all my friends You'll never set foot in my room again You'll close it off, board it up Remember the time that I spilled the cup Of apple juice in the hall Please tell mom this is not her fault. One music listener states that, "When I listen to music I don't take all of the lyrics literally-it's an art" (Quoted in Milwaukee Journal). Though lyrics are protected by the first amendment, I feel that there should be a limit of the freedom an artist must reach. Though five times the amount of males follow through with actual suicide (Carr). Researchers studied suicide rates seven days following 38 real-life stories of those who committed suicide, which aired on three major network stations. " They also add that, "The increase of suicide rates in society is at proportional rates to the amount of network coverage" (Quoted in Bower).
