policies

Riiiinnggg!! A school bell or a wake-up call? Under the new school policy, after the sounding of the second bell, students not seated will now face severe consequences that include detention and referrals. The new policy is part of a package of stricter disciplinary actions addressing tardiness, dress and behavioral codes, and a crackdown on drugs and alcohol. The WASC committee who decided that the weakest point in Harbor was the discipline, identified the biggest problem was an alarming amount of tardies. A solution to this difficulty was to implement a new policy that punishes people who come into their class late without an excuse by giving them detention. The policy requires that tardy students sign a pink sheet that hangs in every classroom, the teacher must then call the students parents to inform them of their child's tardy. After the first offense, which gives the tardy student ten minutes after class, the second offense will lead to an hour-long detention. Failure to attend detention

In the past semester the administration has seen an increase in the usage of drugs and alcohol, which in turn has led to an increase in the disciplinary measures taken against it. The need for this code, explains principal Dax Bryson came about from a tremendous amount of complaints of both the staff and parents about the indecent dress and behavior that is at school dances. The committee is in the process of rewriting a present dress code that was rarely enforced. The new policy has caused controversy among students, junior Nikki Gotlieb belives that "the tardy policy is too strict, I think this is too much in excess. " The next part of the package is going to be a strictly enforced dress and behavioral code that is going to be especially enforced at school dances. Quote Bryson and CortezThe behavior policy is going to resemble the rules that are applied at Santa Cruz and Soquel High. The two policies will be sternly enforced and those who violate them will receive suspensions. It feels like we are back elementary school. (Indra) The administration has already seen a positive change due to the policy; Dax Bryson observed that "even in the second day of enforcement(finish quote) Even in its first days of enforcement many students are seeing glitches and ways of avoiding the punishments, and this will only continue, Senior Cindy Muta thinks that, "the policy has some good points, but students will find a way to get around the rules resulting in more forgeries and even kids cutting class, because the punishment for cutting class is less than for being tardy. With the new policy the administration is going to crack down on (talk to bryson) With many new policies coming many students feel stifled and overwhelmed, QuoteIf you have an opinion about the new policies that the school is going to enforce please write a letter and place it in the Gangplank box located in the main office. Bryson explained that in terms of disciplinary actions taken against inappropriate activities Harbor has been really lenient, but that is about to change. The new code will(Bryson, about dress code) This too is getting many students angry, many of whom believe that the enforcement of the dress code will take away some of the freedom that comes with being in high school. It's understandable but I don't think that this is the right approach. Some students believe that the dress and behavior codes will diminish the number of students who go to school dances greatly, as stated Another area the new policies focus upon are drugs and alcohol.
