Mary Liebes

Today I met with Glenn Duncan’s two special education teachers, Mrs. Ballard who works with children in grades 4,5 and 6 and Mrs. Lynn who works with children in grades K-3. On this particular day I went with Mrs. Ballard, shadowing her and meeting the children she works with. We began the morning by traveling to a fifth grade class where we worked with a young man named Paul who had been having problems understanding fractions. As we pulled Paul to the side of the room for some one on one learning Mrs. Ballard showed me the best style of learning that worked for him, visual and hands on learning. And for the next half an hour Paul, Mrs. Ballard and I worked together on fractions using blocks, a special work book for Paul, and a dry erase board, all of which helped him to learn the concept of fractions. From there we went to Mr. William’s fifth grade class where I met and worked with a young man named Wade with math. Wade seemed to be quiet and shy but he had no trouble!

nd I was looking forward to returning the next week. Lynn, shadowing her and meeting her many kids she works with. From there we went to a second grade class where Mrs. After a few problems he finally started to get the hang of it but he was still not sure about himself or his work and he continually asked me if what he was doing was right. It was another great day at Glenn Duncan Elementary and again I was looking forward to working with these kids again. Both girls are in fifth grade and having trouble in math. She did not want to work on her journal but rather talk to me and ask me all kinds of questions about myself. From there we went back to the special education classroom where we worked with Kayla. Ballard and I returned to the special education classroom where again we worked with Kayla and Latisha on their multiplication tables. As a group the students read the short poem that was in front of them which had to do with birds in the winter season. Lynn introduced me to the group of about five students we would be working with.
