William Carey

             William Carey was born on August 17, 1761 in the village of Northamptonshire in the midland region of England. Carey’s interest in education would form a major part of his life’s work, as the eldest son of a village school master and weaver, Edmund Carey. At the age of seven, Carey developed severe allergies and a skin disease, which was greatly irritated by long exposures of the sun. Therefore, his parents found work for him indoors as a shoemaker. Later on William Carey worked as an apprentice to a shoemaker at Piddington named John Warr. John Warr was the man who led Carey to his faith in Jesus Christ in 1775. With the Revolution of 1688 and the Act of Toleration the following year, Dissenters were granted statutory freedom of worship. In 1719, Parliament passed a bill a bill forbidding anyone who attended a Dissenting meeting from teaching. Penalty for its violation was three months in jail.              On Sunday, June 10, 1781, William Carey and Dorothy Plackett were united in marriage at the church in Piddington. There was a series of severe death, diseases, and sicknesses that covered the Carey family, during which William Carey almost died. Carey’s formal ordination for his calling of a pastor, was on August 1, 1787. There were twenty ministers from the Northamptonshire Association who joined the local villages to celebrate the solemn setting apart of their pastor. Then on May 7, 1789, Carey announced his acceptance and began his ministry of the call from the Baptist Church at Harvey Lane in Leicester.
