Conservatism tends to be viewed as heavily influenced by Christianity. Conservatives often fight for Christian morals to be embedded in society, towards things such as abortion and pornography. During the “long 60’s” they also fought against the evils of communism. The ideal that is emphasized against communism is that it threatens capitalism, but the Christian Bible sympathizes with the poor and lower class; it emphasizes that monetary gain is not the way to reach heaven. Contrary to this Christian belief, the conservative party’s main ambition is increased capitalism. Every conservative belief at this time infers to the eradication of communism and the prevention of the leftists from becoming powerful, who hinder capitalism. The conservatives took action against things that were considered immoral by Christians, to appeal to Christians who did not necessarily support the conservative’s capitalist ideals of decentralized government or elimination of welfare. This use of religion generated more conservative party members which eventually led to the growth and success of the Republican Party.

The introduction of Abortion to the US had a very similar effect as the sex education issue. With an increase of this promiscuous sex, there would also have to be new ways of educating the youth. For example, the conservative party reached further than just bringing religious groups in: “Not only was a new alliance struck between Protestants and Catholics, but the abortion issue also helped forge an alliance between registered Democrats and registered Republicans” (233); this brought Democrats to the Republican side. This is substantial evidence to prove that the parents with right wing religious ideals are influential. Nixon emphasized decentralization: “he began to reduce or dismantle many of the social programs of the Great Society and the New Frontier” (Brinkley et al, 542). Christian Religion was obviously not the only foundation of the party, because free enterprise often contradicts the “love one another” ideal of Christianity. The conservative party therefore protested against anti-religious controversy to gain the attention of Christian religious members, which resulted in many of them pledging their loyalty to the Republican Party, which even went against non-Christian ideals, such as hindering the lives of the poor and spreading capitalism. And I’m still registered a Democrat and I thought I was liberal, but I really don’t understand the meaning of the word’” (230). Conservatives were worried that the birth control pill would inevitably lead to permissive sex (McGirr, 160). ornography, birth control, sex education and abortion generated the most success, because all Christian religions were opposed to these.
President Nixon also proves that the Republican Party is focused on protecting capitalism. Future national Christian Right leaders “sought to put regulatory control [of pornographic material] in the hands of local communities” (227), thus giving control to the local communities that would enable them to make decisions that could potentially be unconstitutional.
