             Conservatism tends to be viewed as heavily influenced by Christianity. Conservatives often fight for Christian morals to be embedded in society, towards things such as abortion and pornography. During the "long 60's" they also fought against the evils of communism. The ideal that is emphasized against communism is that it threatens capitalism, but the Christian Bible sympathizes with the poor and lower class; it emphasizes that monetary gain is not the way to reach heaven. Contrary to this Christian belief, the conservative party's main ambition is increased capitalism. Every conservative belief at this time infers to the eradication of communism and the prevention of the leftists from becoming powerful, who hinder capitalism. The conservatives took action against things that were considered immoral by Christians, to appeal to Christians who did not necessarily support the conservative's capitalist ideals of decentralized government or elimination of welfare. This use of religion generated more conservative party members which eventually led to the growth and success of the Republican Party.
             The conservatives targeted anything involved with sexual liberation. Issues such as pornography, birth control, sex education and abortion generated the most success, because all Christian religions were opposed to these. As a result, the conservative party gained strong support, even support from Democrats, who were liberal on issues regarding communism. For example, in Lisa McGirr's Suburban Warriors, "the abortion issue also helped forge an alliance between registered Democrats and registered Republicans. In Orange County, according to [Cathy] Sullivan, 'You had all these brand-new, former Democrats that were upset about this issue, some of them becoming Republicans'" (McGirr, 233).
