Intrigue

             Do you like stories are suspenseful, dramatic, exciting, and sometimes horrifying? How about "The Cask of Amontillado" by Edgar Allan Poe and "Young Goodman Brown" by Nathaniel Hawthorne? These are just a couple of stories these authors wrote about Europe in the 1840's. Their stories, or possibly just tales, were passed from generations to generation. Reminding us and inspiring generations of stability of Family Values and Family Heritage.
             "The Cask of Amontillado" is cast in the mystique Southern France town close to the border of Spain. This mild summer climates provided for the worlds finest Wines and Sherries ever produced (Xenos Page 1). In the 1800's affluent families controlled these vineyards, wineries, catacombs and vaults that extended beneath the rustic city. Family values, heritage, and honor out-weighed any amount of wealth a family accumulated (Xenos Page 5).
             Fortunato was one of these families; his heritage and wealth traced back generations. They were the wealthy of the wealthiest flourishing in prosperous and unfavorable times.
             Fortunato considered himself as superior; he was arrogant, self centered and egotistical and felt his family heritage was next to Godly. He was also a renowned Wine, Sherry (Amontillado) critic of his time (Poe 192).
             Montresor's family on the other hand, was not so fortunate. They had endured hard times and loosing much of the family properties and wealth. Fortunato knowing of this continually toyed with Montresors emotions, insulting and humiliating his ancestors for their judgements and mistakes (Poe 192). With this in mind Montresor endured enough. He laid out the perfect plan to "Cask" Fortunato forever.
