The draft riot that occurred in New York City in 1863 had several causes such as, the draft itself, President Abraham Lincoln, The Republican Party, the Conscription Act and The Emancipation Proclamation. The draft was an outrageous idea because it was considered tyrannical. "It would have been strange, indeed, if the American people had submitted to a measure which is a distinctive mark of the most despotic governments of the continent." (The New York Times) (1) Abraham Lincoln caused controversy because he was the one that signed the Conscription Act but he did offer a way out. He offered to any man who could put up $300 dollars that he could pay his way out of the war. The Republican Party is who got the whole idea to have a draft got moving in the House. The Conscription Act is The Federal Militia Act of 1862, which gave the president the authority to draft 300,000 able-bodied men. The Emancipation Proclamation was issued by Abraham Lincoln on Jan. 1, 1863, during the! When the city counsel thought that they had settled everything there were still several groups of rioters on the streets who still had not heard the news about what the city counsel had to offer them. There were 150 militiamen led by Colonel H. The mob won many of the battles and forced the military to retreat. This made it very difficult to ever have a possibility to put down the rebels. The officers made it to the roofs to stop the rebels up there and they kept pushing the mob back. 75-80) (3) The first day of the actual riots was on July 13th, 1863. The mob had grown in considerable size since the day before and the police started to worry that even with this many patrolmen they would not be able to break up the mob. The riots of New York had stirred up things in other parts of the country. He said that now the city is back in running order, all places ruined will be fixed or rebuilt, a small military presence will remain in the city to keep the peace and it is now safe to go about your normal business. Word of this quickly spread through the city. They were still fighting the military and in some cases over powering them.
