Gatsby had the dream since he was a young man. A dream to rise above his ascribed status and achieve one of an elite member of society. As Gatsby's dad tells Nick Carraway, "Jimmy (Jay) was bound to get ahead. He always had some resolves like this or something. Do you notice what he's got about improving his mind? Soon Tom found out that Daisy was spending time with Gatsby and he knew that it had to stop, even though Tom was also having an affair. Daisy didn't know Gatsby all that well. Daisy knew now that he was alive, and that he wasn't just an ordinary man. Then when he is gone, like the first time they met, "she is gay again, gay as ever". He found out how he got his money and that he panned on stealing Daisy from him. Then she saw all of his belongings and was amazed by his wealth. Gatsby never let go of his dream and it caused the destruction of him. All of the hard work to become rich from the longing to be with Daisy was finally paying off.
