Gulliver's Travels
In Gulliver's Travels the author Jonathan Swifts main satire are the people that are in the government and other high office positions. Jonathan Swift idea is to satirize the government officials by making them look ridiculous on the decisions they made. He also shows in his work that these people have no business running a government and got their jobs by coming from elite groups.First you have to meet Gulliver who was a fictional character of Jonathan Swift who delivered his messages through him. He was a surgeon, who was educated and spoke many languages. He set to sail to go onto many journeys. In the first book the voyage to Lilliput Jonathan Swift shows how politicians are elected into the government. They are given an obstacle, which was jumping a rope. The higher a person jumps the higher government position he can be in. That would be a satire on political elections or if there were any in England. Jonathan Swift is clearly satirizing the English politicians. The politicians in England at that time were put in the position by having connections or
They were jealous of each other and lied to everybody to gain more money and power. The people who made this decision to go to war for this reason were obviously the politicians and monarchs. Due to this conflict the two sides went to war and many people died. This could be compared to the English monarchs and how cruel they were. He uses fictional character to represent the people that he is satirizing which in this case are the politicians and royalty because of the reason I had given. Gulliver was very impressed with these intelligent creatures that he learned their language and he started to live like them. It also shows the suppression of Irish people by the English in Swift's time. That is why Gulliver is sick to return to England, that he has to deal with this everyday. They would show their power by killing innocent people. Also in the first book Swift describes how unprofessional the politicians were in Lilliput. He is also satirizing the society the horses live and the society the English are living in. In the third book where Gulliver visits Laputa the floating island the satire is strong. In England the politicians and royalty could not have enough power. In conclusion, the main satire of the book is the royalty and the politicians who run the country. The issues being perhaps bad experience with the decisions the monarchy did during his life.
