Racism has existed in many facets of life, such as, how the media portrayes African Americans negatively, whether it's on television or through newspapers and magazines. The aspects presented by Zora Neal Hurston in her novel I Love Myself When I Am Laughing and Then Again When I Am Looking Mean and Impressive are still applicable today. This essay will review Zora's discussions on racism associated with the print media, Jim Crow Laws, and corporate America. This essay will also analyze the reviews according to how racism is being handled today more positively or negatively. Ms. Hurston describes racism in her article "What White Publishers Won't Print" as white people feeling they have more brains than African Americans, and they do not provide African Americans the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities (Hurston 169). This sign of racism is still going on in the world today. I can relate to this issue very well. I have experienced working under a white owned store, where whites would work the register, and African Americans work the floor. Why couldn't African Americans operate a register? The whites felt that "Negroes" did not have the same intelligence, but simultaneously, didn't give them the

Another point in "What White Publishers Won't Print" that was raised was how theatrical promoters and publishing houses are in the business to make money, and producing of black romance stories will not sell. Well, in the story Zora tells the Pet Negro is a slave who the slave-owner educated. However, there are other stations that do represent African Americans better, like MTV. For example, the CEO of BET (Black Entertainment Television) is African American, however, guests that appear, as well as hosts, represent African Americans poorly. They feel that unless the story or play involves racial tension, neither will take interest in the public eye (Hurston 170). Many artist make disturbing remarks stating that they would have never come out if they knew the opposite race would be listening to their music. Zora tells how blacks can be perfect in a white man's eye once he is taken under his wing and cherished. One day I hope we all can be looked at as equal and then the light can shine on us all. While Jim Crow Laws, however, appear to be nonexistent today, in some instances it still remains. It is sad that whites don't realize all African Americans have a certain style and character, but that does not make them any less equal. Although it is not stressed enough through society on how everyone is equal, racism is always going to be here. Zora explains how the media does not focus enough on the positive outlooks of African Americans, but yet can always focus on the negative aspects. Even though laws have been established to prevent racism today, there are still things that are allowing racism acts to go on. I feel in some ways we are given the opportunity to represent ourselves better, but don't acknowledge it.
