The Hitler Youth

             People everywhere have been told the story of the Holocaust and World War II. Most people, however, have been given the story from the Jewish perspective. Many people have written numerous books, and research papers have been published concerning the Holocaust and the horrors bestowed upon the Jews. One point of view not so commonly explored is that of the German youth. These very young innocent children were brainwashed into thinking anything and everything Germany and Hitler did benefited them and Hitler's desire to create "the ultimate race". These kids knew nothing of the horrible death camps and the cruelty that transpired in them. The Jews were not the only ones to suffer. The Germans too endured much suffering and hardship in search of a better life.
             " My program for educating youth is hard. Weakness must be hammered away. In my castles of the Teutonic Order a youth will grow up before which the world will tremble. I want a brutal, domineering, fearless, cruel youth. Youth must be all that. It must bear pain. There must be nothing weak and gentle about it. The free, splendid beast of prey must once again flash from its eyes...That is how I will eradicate thousands of years of human domestication... That is how I will create the New Order." Adolf Hitler, 1933.
             Hitler devised a program to mold the youth of Germany. His idea involved developing the "...Gleichschaltung: a society forced into line under one belief system, one life style, and one leader, with no exceptions" (Dvorson 29). One young man recalled his life in the Hitler Youth. He stated that his peers "manipulated, abused, and betrayed (him) in the name of his country" (Dvorson 13). This appears to be the case of over 8.8 million youth (boys and girls) in Germany by 1939 (History Place).
