The controversy over censoring the Internet is a subject with relevant arguments
on both sides but just as with any form of media or expression, it deserves the
freedom to be presented to the public as a whole. There is no true harm in
supplying the population with such a vast and extensive source of reference,
education, and entertainment. The Internet has no boundaries which is acceptable
around the mature audience. It's wonderful to finally have a media form that is
actually subject to real life. The radio has become so censored that the word
"green" when used as a synonym for marijuana is blanked out. And of course
television, which is "Teletubbies" when compared to the real world is quite tame
even before the new ratings and v-chips.
There is alot of nudity, violence, vulgarity, etc. found on the Internet, but no
more than in the real world. The Internet is finally a real life form of media, that's
what makes it great. The control of the Internet should be done at a personal level,
not at the level of contribution. It all boils down to "If you don't want to see it,
you have the power to do just that." However, it should be controllable around an
immature audience. Controversial images and subjects can serve to educate the
mature population, but it can desensitize and disturb younger children. In the
home is where censoring is acceptable. Currently, there are devices to do such
things, but the process is still in need of major improvement. These devices censor
out way too many subjects slightly related to the harsh ones. For example, these
devices prevent the access of pornography, but in addition they would also keep
one from accessing information for example on breast cancer.
