Mandatory Sentencing
Crimes in America are growing each day. There are different reasons to the growing of the crimes committed. One big reason that comes to mind is the fact that some criminals are not receiving enough burdens on their punishment. Repeat offenders are currently playing a big role in the growing of the crimes in America. Maybe the penalties that were given in the past are not enough for the potential criminal's decision on not doing a crime. "In recent years, various mandatory sentencing laws have faced increasing criticism and numerous political or legal challenges. One of the main complaints for the law is that it is too harsh." Many observers criticize mandatory sentences for forcing judges to impose sentences that are too harsh. Some criminals third strike are said to be nonviolent crimes that critics say does not warrant a mandatory twenty five year sentence. For example, a homeless man who was convicted for attempting to break into a church to steal food in nineteen ninety seven and received a three-strike sentence of twenty five years to life. The most favorable outcome of the three-strike law taking place is the fact that the repeat offenders are taking off the streets for a long period of time. "Many more supporters also say that putting offenders in prison for longer period of time keeps them off the street, thus preventing them from committing more crimes" ("Mandatory Sentencing" 1999). An average innocent citizen is frightened by a three-time felon. The price of allowing these offenders to return to a life-style of endangering citizens is much too expensive. The three strike law has many benefits. These types of criminals are endangering the lives of innocent citizens of America. Applying this statement to a law-breaking, three-time felon is a good way of keeping the crimes down in America. Paying the price to keep dangerous criminals off of the streets is a priceless fee. Putting chronic offenders in prison for long periods, especially upon second and third convictions is the most effective way to reduce crimes in America. "Most experts, however, say that California's and other states' three- strike laws are constitutional" ("Three Strikes Crime", 2002). The main reason they argue is because of the high cost of imprisoning people. Laws of this type often termed "three strikes and you're out," have been passed in the states of Washington and California. While in the process of this duty, if a previously convicted offender knows that getting caught one more time will lead to a long sentence, he or she will think twice about committing another crime.
