Christopher Columbus
Out of all the many great explorers most people think of Christopher Columbus as the greatest. They think of him as the greatest because he was the first explorer to reach the Americas. He was one of the few early believers that the world was round. Throughout Columbus's great life as an explorer he went on four great voyages and made many great discoveries. Columbus had a great life and many interesting things happened to him in his lifetime. Columbus# forever changed the world by his many discoveries and it is amazing how many discoveries he managed to go back to the same location every time even though he had no idea where he really was and he made many navigational errors. Columbus was born in Genoa Italy in 1451. Genoa had a busy port and many ships went in and out of its port everyday#. His father was a weaver and it is believed that he started to become a weaver when he was young. He had very little education and learned to read and write as an adult. He went to sea just like the other Genoese boys did and voyaged in the Mediterranean. Columbus landed in March of 1493 in Lisborn#. Columbus was marooned for a year and was rescued and he reached Spain in November 1504. He made his way south and missed the sites of the Maya, he sailed along Panama and then he finally headed back for Santo Domingo. # He still believed that he had reached Asia. The Royal Commissioner was Francisco de Bodadilla who arrived in 1500 and removed the Columbus brothers from the government and sent them back to Spain in chains#. King John wouldn't fund his expedition so he took his plan to Queen Isabella and she told him to wait because she was busy fighting a war. Columbus claimed to have reached islands just off! the coast of Asia. The Pinta, The Nina, and the Santo Maria were outfitted in the minor ports of Palos. He left on September 26, 1493 and had 17 ships and almost 1,500 men#. He left in April 1494 and explored Cuba but never proved it to be an island#. The Spanish settlers were unruly and would not work. Martin Alonzo Pinzon who had explored on his own with the Pinta rejoined Columbus but the two ships became separated at sea on their way back to Spain. # First he made landfall at Martinique and then went to Santo Domingo. # He didn't find his quick route to the rich Asian Mainland and he had been only somewhat successful at getting gold from the Indians.
