This past presidential election was one the most historic events that our young country has ever seen. There have been disputed elections before but none have been brought to the State Supreme Courts or the Federal Supreme Courts. So much controversy surrounding an election really was unheard of before this past year. Therefore, as one might expect, a plethora of information about the election and the events that transcribed is available. The only problem is trying to sort out the most important happenings. The first event that I have found worthy of inclusion in the ten most important of the past election cycle was the Republican National Convention held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was the first chance that we got to see of how well George W. Bush could be of a leader. The next event that helped shape the election was Vice-President Gore's choice of Sen. Joe Lieberman as his running mate. The fact that Sen. Lieberman was a Jew played a key role in the w!ay Gore was thought of during the remainder of the campaign. After that the next important occurrence was the tightening of the race during the middle of September. Finally the race became a tense battle between two rather sim
The next incident was Vice President Gore's concession call to Gov. Bush back and told him that he was withdrawing his earlier concession. The ensuing major development was Florida Supreme Court's order of a full manual recount of the 45,000 undervotes. Harris said that the manual recounts could only be allowed if the county officials found a problem with the computer. By making this decision the courts made it very easy for Secretary of State Harris to certify the 537-vote lead that Bush had over Gore. Lieberman contested that Harris' decision ignored hundreds of votes and thousands of hours of labor by election workers. This goes back to the motto of this year's convention, Renewing America's Purpose, Together. He also spoke of his record in Austin having to do with BI-partisanship. The format was different then that of the previous presidential debates, in that it was more of a conversation between the two candidates. The projections had Gore trailing by 50,000 votes. In hindsight that could have been the better choice. " He went on to say "We don't intend to provoke a Constit!utional crisis. With the race tightened more people started to pay attention to what the candidates were saying, making the upcoming debates muc!h more important. Thus handing the Presidency over to Gov.
