Saint Bernadette

Marie Bernarde (also called Bernadette) Soubirous was born in Lourdes, France on January 7, 1884. She grew up in poverty. Her father was a miller. She was the oldest of six children. As a child she worked as a shepard in the country away from her family. It was good for Bernadette because the air was fresh and the food was plentiful. At the age of 14 she returned to her parents. She made her first Communion in 1858. Later that year, on February 11, 1858 the Blessed Mother, Mary appeared to Bernadette. Bernadette was out looking for firewood with her sister and a friend. While they were looking Mary appeared to Bernadette above a rosebush in a grotto. Bernadette describe Mary as a 16 or 17 year old girl, who was wearing a


Bernadette's body lies incorrupt in the chapel of the convent of Saint-Gildard at Nevers, and that this convent is open to the public. Today millions of people pray to the humble Saint Bernadette. Bernadette soon proved to them that she really did have visions of the Blessed mother. Bernadette did as she was told, she asked the priest to build a chapel in honor of Mary, and she prayed for sinners. Saint Bernadette's feast day is April 16. When Bernadette got older she was admitted to the convent of the Sisters of Charity at Nevers, France. She helped take care of the sick and needy children. There she lived, worked, and learned how to read and write. Many people today still visit the grotto. They pray to Saint Bernadette and the Blessed Mother. Mary also asked Bernadette to pray for the sinners. Mary had asked Bernadette to ask the priest to have a chapel built at the grotto in honor of the BlessedMother.
