Child Abuse

             There are millions of children being abused every day. They are abused in many different ways but all are very harmful. These children are usually sent back to the same guardian, and are then abused again. Over half of the children sent back to the abusive home are killed by abuse that has simply gone too far. It seems today's judicial system just does not care enough, so it is up to us as a society to help these children.
             I wrote this paper to inform people about child abuse, and to heighten their awareness. My interest in this topic started a few years ago when I met Jameel, a young boy who had been abused in his past. He taught me a few things and I began to study abuse. The statistics on abuse are horrifying. I hope to make the reader aware of what happens behind closed doors, perhaps even in your neighborhood.
             I would like to thank Mr. Schneider for his help with this project. I would also like to thank my mom and Katie for their great proofreading skills. The librarians were also very helpful. I am thankful for the great academic skills of my friends that have helped me out. This paper is incomplete due to unobtainable sources and limited resources for obtaining some information.
             Child abuse is rampant in today's society. Any one can become a victim of child abuse or neglect (Landau, p.33) It is probably one of the most commonly committed crimes in the U.S. Joyce Meyer says, "I believe that most people are abused in one way or another during their lifetime". Usually no one is told and so no one is punished for the crime. However the number of reports have been skyrocketing lately, whether it is because abuse has become more common, or from more people not being afraid to report it, is hard to tell. In 1999 the Child Protective Service Agencies investigated around three million reports of abuse that involved the maltreatment of over four million children (FAQ, Internet).
