Fletcher Henderson started his career in 1923. He gathered together from the small groups of quintets and sextets a growing number of notable New York-based players and formed a full orchestra. By the late 1920s, Henderson could conduct a 13 to 14 piece orchestral band. He was also accompanied by famous saxophonist Don Redman.
