The Similarities between Bird's College is a Waste of Time and Money and Perry's Examsmanship and the Liberal Arts
William G. Perry Jr. and Caroline Bird, both have their own perspective on our education system. Based on their essays, Examsmanship And The Liberal Arts: A Study In Educational Epistemology and College Is A Waste Of Time And Money written by the authors above respectively, views ranging from one end to the other end of the scale were found. Although there is a huge contradiction between Bird and Perry's idea, there are some thoughts in their essay that supports each other's ideas. Certain parts of Perry's and Bird's essay sees eye to eye on college does not prepare students for the job industry. The majority of students feel that going through college did not help prepare them for their job. In one of Bird's interview she "listened to a 1970 Mount Holyoke graduate: ...When I got out I made up my mind that I wasn't going to school anymore because so many of my courses had been bull*censored*"(465). They go to college expecting to learn a lot about the career they are interested in but instead they end up taking a bunch of classes that don't really have anything to do with their career choice. Then when they actually go and try to get a job in their field they find out that their college diploma is not really helping them get the
Many jobs that only used to want their workers to have a high school diploma now require some college education due to this extremely complicated nature. However college is not only about getting a good job 'but about acquiring knowledge and broadening one's horizon'. Nevertheless, college definitely has its pros and cons. In addition to that, it is hard out there for recent graduates to find a good job since there is so much competition due to the increasing accessibility of a college education. Studies have shown that most of the students end up finding a job in some other field than what they originally intended and went to college for. This shows that without knowing how to apply the facts one has learned he or she would still be able to graduate from college and this is just as bad as taking the cours!es one does not need for their major. Another reason that college is thought of as a waste of time and money is because many people actually end up working in different professions than what they went to college for to begin with. Student now will need more than a bachelor's degree, which is initially needed to get a job. This supports Bird's idea that a student after graduating from college does not mean he or she has learned all the necessaries that prepare him or her for the job. Therefore, even if they do get a job, it is usually not what they got their degree for. Also, college prepares us with academic knowledge in order to succeed in the future as higher education is essential for preparation for one's future. All the student needs to do is to memorize facts.
