A Pair of Silk Stocking or The Ghostly Letter?
My enjoyment in A Pair of Silk Stockings by Kate Chopin, is in no comparison with my indulgence in The Ghostly Letter by Susan Millner Graham. I much more prefer The Ghostly Letter because of the way is written compared to A Pair of Silk Stockings. A pair of Silk Stockings was told in an omniscient narrative perspective, with an opening of "Little Mrs. Sommers one day found herself..." in resemblance of the opening of a childish tale, caused me to lose complete interest. In contrast, The Ghostly Letter was told from a first person narrative perspective. As the story begins with "We had enjoyed a lovely day in the country", it's like someone explaining to you an event which then leads on to something important. While comprehending the story teller's problems, you realize their fears and despair, and you sympathize for them, since you are seeing the story from only one point of view. This way, it becomes more intellectual and personal than a story being told in an omniscient narrative perspective, thus, my preference. Kate Chopin in A Pair of Silk Stockings provides a la
Because of this, the story continues and repeats itself in our mind even after we read the story, unlike A Pair of Silk Stockings, which is left behind once we reach the last word. Every event was worth indulging as the story teller leads you to the climax. However, even with such hidden and interesting theme, The Ghostly Letter is still the better one of both. This causes the story to be unbiased, and thus, boring. Once was when the dead woman experiences epiphany as she realizes the curse she was under; a continuing death, and the other time was when the man opens the door and see a bloody body of a woman. This could be implied to the real world we live in right now, as one gives in to temptation once, the easier you give in to the next. Since the story was presented in realism, it makes the whole story credible, and thus, haunts us. She even includes hints of tragedy in the beginning- "They say that all good things must come to an end, however none of us ever seem to realize. The wife and the husband, through the exchange of oath of forever being with each other, had cursed themselves even till after their death. This creates the breath taking tension throughout the story, causing you to not be able to book the story down. Sommers in the story, in the beginning, had only wished to buy cheap things for her family, with a simple goal of giving something new to everyone. The story is told step by step without flashbacks or a sudden time change, which as a result, leads you into confusion, causing you to ask What is the point here? As the story goes closer to the end, the time pace only becomes more rapid. Whereas Susan Millner Granham in The Ghostly Letter, provides all necessary imagery and details for you to step into the story teller's shoe. Climax was created 2 times within the short story.
