The bigger picture in Shukhov’s life in the soviet labor camp is staying alive. Many of the men in the camp have no concerns about their lives or their work. Many men get into trouble with the guards, and are sent to so
. . .
Another character that Shukhov admires greatly is Tyurin. After each meal “he finished eating and licked his spoon and pushed it in the top of his boot”(172). While eating, Shukhov participates in another ritual where he always eats with his own spoon. Even while Snub Nose is breathing down Tyurin’s neck about the reports the prisoners are supposed to hand in by the end of the day, Tyurin remains calm, and never takes his anger out on the prisoners. While other characters make it known that they have extreme hatred for the officers, Shukhov always keeps to himself. Even though Shukhov states to the reader that he realizes that his life will never be the same, he still takes pride in many everyday jobs. The officer while the men were working on the wall talks down to Shukhov “ what the hell are we going to do without you when you served your time”(123) the officer states. Tyurin is a good man, and also like Shukhov is sentenced to be in the soviet labor camp against his will. Across from Shukhov where he was eating was the old man that “you could pick him out among all the men with their bent backs because he was straight as a ramrod”(171). By taking each situation in stride he loses touch with the outside world, and demonstrates how he is unable to think about anything beyond the daily aspects of camp life.
