ground water pollution
Ground water is the water found in spaces between soil particles and rocks, and within cracks of the bedrock. Some ground water can be found beneath the land surface in most of the US. Because of its availability and general good quality, ground water is widely used for household needs and other purposes.Ground water is found in natural rock formations, which are called aquifers. For the most part, ground water comes directly from precipitation or surface water that infiltrates below the land surface. Then, this ground water flows into many streams and lakes. In addition, ground water can be exiting from the subsurface as springs. But most commonly, we obtain ground water from wells. Most ground water is constantly moving, but it normally moves very slowly as it winds its way through tiny pathways around grains of sediment or through small openings in rock. Some rock materials have large enough fractures or openings that ground water can move faster; however, often, the openings do not continue very far.Ground water is an integral part of the hydrologic cycle, which starts with precipitation, such as rain and goes directly into lakes and streams. Some of the water, which seeps into the ground is used by plants for tran
Dealing with mixtures of chemicals under the Food Quality Protection Act and! Safe Drinking Water Act will continue to be a challenge in the future. Misuse of this system for disposal of anything other than domestic or sanitary waste can pose a substantial threat to ground water and makes the system subject to Federal regulation. In a recent study by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, researchers noted that common mixtures of pesticides and fertilizers could have biological effects at the current concentrations measured in ground water. Another potential agricultural sources that contaminate ground water are feedlots. States report that agriculture practices continue to be a major source of ground water contamination. 6 Natural Resources of Contamination is also a very important source of ground water contamination. 2 Municipal Landfills have long been used to dispose of wastes. Heavy soil and organic material lessen the potential for contamination. Third is to work cooperatively to identify better waste management options from pollution prevention and recycling to reutilization of wastewaters. There are many ways for getting involved in protecting groundwater resources from being contaminated.
