Knowlege in Society

Knowledge is the key to success in any society, without knowledge us as human beings cannot survive. It is also important that knowledge have a means of being passed on from person to person. The invention of the printing press in 1450 changed and revolutionized the way knowledge was spread thought the world forever. Knowledge was now more readily available and easier to pass on to many more people. Before the advent of the printing press the Catholic Church was the only source for written materials. In a sense the held and controlled all the written knowledge. All the written materials that the Church held was passed down, transcribed by monks who were believed that they were doing a service to god by copying the literature, so they didn't question anything. This was means for a lot of incorrect information. This was also a very slow way of distributing information, an

A good example of this was in 1517 when Martin Luther produced a thesis of complaints against the Catholic Church. Knowledge is very important to educate a society. I think we owe a lot to this invention, freeing up information from the church and sharing resources were two very important things we needed to forward knowledge and scientific development. This began the first studies on how chemicals can cure peoples illnesses, and obviously blossomed into what is modern day medicine. From this point forward the printing press began what was virtually the rebirth of knowledge throughout the world. With its ability to produce mass quantities of accurately printed material, it revolutionized and spread knowledge around the world. Some people agreed and they then formed the Protestant Reformation. They started publishing experiments they had done so other people could see them and learn from them. This group grew into what is now the Protestant religion. If the printing press wasn't invented, knowledge would have never spread so quickly and become more available than it did. The Church began to lose control over its people and society. This cause the Church to lose the hold on knowledge and power that it previously held. Alchemists also began to publish formulas and findings that they had developed in secret prior to the press. The Bible was later re-written by Luther and translated to German, which made it even more acc!essible to the everyday person. Universities soon benefited because they had a means of fast, accurate production of textbooks.
