Bookreview of Courageous Leadership by Bill Hybels
Courageous Leadership is written by Bill Hybel. Hybel explains what he has learned about leadership for the past thirty years at Will Creek Community Church. Although Hybel focuses on leaders of local church, much of information in this book can be applied to leaders of ministries outside the church. I am involved in a parachurch, nonprofit ministry and this book ministered to me. I associate very well with some of the topics in Courageous leadership and can apply many other new insights Hybels provides for leaders. I would recommend this book to leaders outside of Bill Hybels target audience. Hybels accomplishes his goal and more. Throughout Courageous Leadership, Bill Hybels practical information to leaders. Some of the insights he provides elementary, but is often forgotten as leaders grow and their ministries expand. Hybels does a good job of reminding leaders what sometimes is understood, but forgotten. For example, chapter eleven's title is The Leader's Pathway, A Vital Walk With God. In this chapter, Hybel explains that the bare minimum of a true leader is their walk with God. As ministries grow, as leaders mature, as skills are obtained, as experiences are shaped, a leader must continue to walk hand in hand w
" (75) One of the greatest Christian men in history understands the value of his team, how much more should I. Another negative aspect of Courageous Leadership is that Bill Hybel never specifically addresses the fact that God labels a leader not man. In my opinion, this is the best section in Bill Hybels's book, Courageous Leadership. In my opinion, if you want to change or refocus the body of Christ, you have to start with the leaders of the church. Members of a congregation, ministry, and organization do not decide who is the leader, but God does. Hybel incorporates his connection with the terrorist attack of 911. As a leader of a ministry, I often get caught up in the ministry itself instead of who I am serving. This sometimes can get me frustrated. A negative aspect of Courageous Leadership is that Bill Hybel never specifically address how leaders should respond to criticism from members of their congregations and outsiders. This could have been a good topic for Bill Hybels to discuss and address before the first chapter. Another positive aspect of Courageous Leadership is Bill Hybel's writing style. I can not push ministry to the forefront and push God to the back. Many times, when I read books who's chapters or sections are long, it is hard to find a place to stop reading. Hybels explains that he could not believe evil could run this deep and that the local church was the hope of the world. Hybels that the stakes of leadership are high in today's time where evil is running ramped.
