Eusebius of Caesarea

             Eusebius of Caesarea is considered by many authorities to be the first church historian . His life would span from 265 -–330 AD. Some claim that this is an estimated date, based on research, statements in others writings of the time, and on those timeline indicators present in his writings. Based on his writings, it is a calculated guess that he was born in the 260's. There is virtually no documentation on Eusebius, until his rise to importance under Constantine, and his own biographical writings. Eusebius birthplace is not documented, nor his parentage. Based on his own writings, he spent his youth in Caesarea, a city in Palestine. References to Eusebius in others works of that time state that his mother was the sister of Pamphilus. This does not make the claim that he was Palestinian. Nor did he refute these assertions. However, he was called "Eusebius the Palestinian by Marcellus (Euseb. Lib. Adv. Marcell. I. 4) and Bash (Lib. ad. Amphil. de Spir. Sancto.c.29)" . T!
             his could further substantiate his taking of the name Eusebius Pamphili. Others have stated that he took this name from a mentor, Pamphilus of Caesarea. He spoke Syriac, Greek, but not Latin, which could be construed that he was born in the region of Syria.
             Prior to Pamphilus death, Eusebius was involved in the school of Origen, in Caesarea. Origen had "developed the model for Christian monasticism" and Pamphilus was the leader of this school. Eusebius was a student of his, in Caesarea, were Pamphilus revived Origen's school, built the library. During the early 4th century, Eusebius documents in his writings about the interaction with other students, who would eventually become scholars of Christianity. (I.e.
