Glass Menagerie
The reason the Unicorn is a symbol in the play, is to represent Laura and the fact that she feels different just like the Unicorn. In her eyes the unicorn even with its differences from the other horses is accepted. She relates with this, because it differs from her experiences in high school where she did not feel as though she fit in.Jim states that he remembered her being late to class and she says, "Yes it was so hard for me getting upstairs, I had that brace on my leg-it clumped so loud! Jim responds, "I never heard any clumping." (249) This is just one example of how she over exaggerates her leg brace. She isolated herself from everyone because she was so self-conscious about her leg brace. Her mother Amanda does not help her overcome the feeling that she is different from everyone else. She makes Laura feel inadequate and that she will never be able to fit into society. I don't think that Amanda does this on purpose, or even realizes she is doing it. I say this, because she is constantly checking on Laura and telling her what to do.An example of this is when she comes home from her D.A.R. meeting and Laura asks her how her meeting went and her mother tells her "No No I did not have the strength to go to D.A.R. The ending left me wanting to know what happened to Laura and her mother. Jim shows her that she alone was the one who held her back from making friends and being normal like she wanted to be, but felt that she could not have. Just as the unicorn is like the other horses after losing its horn. When the horn is broken off the unicorn, it symbolizes for Laura that she has overcome her shyness and can now be accepted as normal like everyone else. Amanda feels that if they do not find her a husband then Laura will not be able to survive. The unicorn losing its horn is a symbol. The horn on the unicorn symbolizes a difference, an obstacle to be overcome and admired. It is delicate, beautiful, and precious in it's own unique way. The unicorn in its original state symbolizes something different. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. She made herself such a nervous wreck that she became physically sick. Laura knows that these two are trying to find her someone to take care of her and this does not help her feelings that she is inadequate or unable to take care of herself. Jim helped her to learn that everyone is insecure in his or her own lives and that it is up to the individual to make their lives better. It was not until her mother was doing the dishes and Tom was out smoking and she was along with Jim that she came out of her shell a little. I found this story to be very good.
