Wuthering Heights

When Emily Bronte died in 1848, she was hardly known around the world as asuccessful author. There are still large portions of her life that people know very littleabout (Benvenuto, I). Emily was born in Thornton, England on July 30, 1818 (Magill 56),to Reverend Patrick Bronte and Maria Branwell Bronte (Emily Bronte." A Chronology. 1). Two years after Emily's birth, her father was appointed curate of Haworth, a small villageon the moors ("Emily Bronte." Emily 1). Here, Emily spent much of her youth. Her placeof residency in Haworth later became the Bronte Museum ("Emily Bronte". Emily 1). Both of Emily's parents accelled in literature. Her mother successfully published an Essay and her father wrote four books and experimented with poetry ("Emily Bronte".Emily 1). Because of this, Emily leaned toward writing. Emily began writing at a veryearly age. In 1846, Emily and her two sisters, Charlotte and Anne, published twenty-onepoems together ("Emily Bronte". Emily 1). The volume was titled Poems by Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. ("Emily Bronte." A Chronology. 1) Since only two copies were soldhowever, she began working on novels instead ("Emily Bronte". Emily 1). In 1826, Mr.

She chose to use love, hate, and revenge rather than ordinarysituations in life, hoping that these would help her book become a classic ("Family" 1). This style of writing can be seen in her novel Wuthering Heights. In February of 1848, Emilyjoined her sister Charlotte at Mme. A way in which she used this method was by giving the smaller charactersconversations involving key points of the novel (Turnell). Cathy grew up in ThrushcrossGrange with no knowledgeof Wuthering Heights, until one day when she was wanderingthrough the moors and met Hareton and played with him in Wuthering Heights. In 1835, Emily became a student as Roe Head school ("EmilyBronte. In doing so, Emilywas able to achieve the idea that each location offered opposite qualities of life as the other. ) Many critics believethat Emily's life was the inspiration to her writing. 1) In November however, their Aunt Elizabeth died, and Charlotte andElizabeth returned home (Benvenuto V). During this time, Heathcliff tookNelly and Cathy back to Wuthering Heights and held them there until Ctahy marriedLinton. Another technique used by Emily was the way in which she started out her novels. Because Patrick couldn't raise the six children alone, Maria's sisterElizabeth moved in with the Brontes as a housekeeper and aided in raising the children("Emily Bronte". Since the children needed an education to one-day supportthemselves, Patrick sent the four eldest girls to the Clergy Daughters' School at CowanBridge (Benvenuto V). At first, the children despised Heathcliff.
