A Rose For Emily
Throughout history there has been a big difference between the North and the South. Now however, they have both changed but there are still some people who live the old way. This is shown in the William Faulkner story "A Rose For Emily". In this story there is a woman, Ms. Emily Grierson that lives in the ways of the old South when all the people of her town have changed and moved on in their way of living, but they still look up to her because she is a strong representation of their past. There is also a man named Homer Barron who came to the town from the north to work. He strongly represented the north and brought change to the South. Faulkner uses these two characters, Homer and Emily, to show the reader the differences of the North and the South, and also how the north affected the South. He not only changed the town physically, but also brought a new friendly, strong, and working attitude to the people. Faulkner also gave Emily a stubborn attitude to express the way the old South was stuck to their traditions. In the story, Faulkner creates Homer Barron's character based on the North. Faulkner shows the reader that Homer easily adapts to any situation he is put into by the face that he travels around so much, and that he easily makes friends in the town. This is how Faulkner directly relates Homer to the North. Emily buys the arsenic and does not give a purpose for it she "just stared at him" (page 535. In that same way Homer brought a change to the town of Jefferson. Line 41) not giving the druggist an explanation. Faulkner does this by having Homer bring a change to the South. Homer was also very adaptable as was the North. Using these two characters Faulkner successfully displays his views of the differences between the North and the South. Emily ad a representation of the old South. istocrat who does not work or earn money; she gets everything from her status. Faulkner uses the fact that the North is really in favor of change and accepts new things easily to give Homer an attitude of readiness.
