Basically, the sides are split on the issue of teaching bilingual education in United States schools. There are many excellent points and arguments for each side of the tape. Personally, I chose to believe that we should keep bilingual education out of the United States because of the high cost to taxpayers. In conclusion, after researching and reading articles for and against bilingual education programs, I have decided to put all of my effort against bilingual programs. Will STAR 2000 Kill Bilingual Education?, pg 1. It is a waste of taxpayer money and a waste of the students' time. Another very strong argument comes from Rossell and Baker where they state that from a 1996 study that out of 300 bilingual programs, 72 percent of them met minimum bilingual standards. Even though all of this money is poured into these programs, over 80 percent of students failed to show significant improvements in the English language after two years of bilingual education.
