Father of the Techno-Thriller

Michael Crichton was born in Chicago, IL in 1942. Michael played basketball for Roslyn High School and at 6’ 7” in the tenth grade he was considered a giant. He was one of four children in a family that did a lot of traveling. When he had graduated from high school, he had already been to forty-eight states, Canada, Mexico, and five European countries; and by the time he started Med-School, he had been to all of Europe, North Africa, and North America. He is considered by himself to be an accomplished traveler.

When they finally got back and he made the call, he found out that his dad had very suddenly of a heart attack. He realized that at such an early age, he had already accomplished all of his life goals. This whole matter brought up questions and ideas to Michael that he and others thought best to leave alone for the benefit of the future of medicine.

After graduation, Michael and his wife separated due to a disagreement about starting a family. Using the names John Lange and Jeffery Hudson, Michael Crichton wrote nine novels.

Every year of med school that Crichton tried to quit, he was required to see a psychiatrist before he would be allowed to quit. Corman convinced him to stay in medical school year after year. It was when his part came that he discovered a necessary part to being a doctor, a complete shutting off of emotions. Michael’s group got an elderly lady. The teachers were very analytical of his writings and were not very encouraging towards his choice of a career.

On one of these trips Michael was scuba diving in the Caribbean and his boat captain received an urgent call for Michael. Michael was almost found out when one of his books, A Case of Need, containing insolent and obvious references to some of his professors was nominated for and won the Edgar Alan Poe Award for Best Mystery of the Year. He entered a state of depression about what he was going to do with the rest of his life.
