Confronted with Adversity
Difficult situations arise almost daily in the lives of most individuals. When confronted with adversity, individuals are forced to deal with the circumstances in the best way they know how. People can reach a point where they can no longer deal with the effects of adversity in their lives. It is at this point that individuals have to make a choice, either to allow themselves to be devastated, or to rise above their difficulties, and allow their true spirit to return to them. The novel The Wars, by Timothy Findley shows that in the midst of adversity, individuals are initially innocent, but the turmoil in their lives can cause them to lose their innocence, and this can cause them to have a strong need for redemption. He chooses to do what is right rather than always doing what he is told. The war causes Robert to lose all of his innocence. Every time that Robert comes close to being killed, his spirit is crushed more and more each time. When Robert looks at the death and destruction of animals that Captain Leather causes, the novel indicates that Robert thinks, "If an animal had done this - we would call it mad and shoot it. This causes him to go to war because there is nothing left for him at home. Adversity is inevitable because there are so many elements of life that initiate difficult situations. 64) It also says, "Robert thought desperately for ways of avoiding what had to be done. Robert has never experienced sex, and he has no sexual knowledge. This hurts Robert's spirit even more. The novel says, "His assailants, who he'd thought were crazies, had been his fellow soldiers.
