amos the prophet

             When deciding upon a prophet to use for this project, I wanted to choose one that I thought not many others would choose while at the same time find one who I thought I could relate with. I decided to choose Amos. Amos was set to save the poor and who wouldn't want to learn about a man named Amos.
             The book of Amos is made up of three parts. In the first part, which includes the first two chapters, there is a general title of the work along with the name of the author and the general date of his ministry. Also as explained in the Catholic Encyclopedia, "The first two chapters are made up of a series of oracles against, Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah, and finally Israel."(Cath Ency 435). In the words of the Catholic Biblical Encyclopedia (note that the Catholic Biblical Encyclopedia, and the Catholic Encyclopedia are different works), this meant that in these chapters God declares that the first six nations listed will be punished for their wickedness, and Israel will be driven into exile because of it's immortality, luxury and idolatry. (p. 62)
             In the second part of Amos comes the judgment and sentence upon Israel.
             Finally in the third section come the five visions of the future judgment.
             Below I will give you a background of Amos and then go into the book itself and explain its happenings. I will wrap the paper up by bringing Amos' views to our time today and reflect on how he and God would feel.
             Amos was a herdsman in a small village in the Southern Kingdom called Thecua, 12 miles from Jerusalem. (Cath Ency 434) Along with his title of herdsman Amos was also known to be a simple dresser of sycamore trees. Amos lived in the time range of 700-800 b.c. (www.bibletutor.com)
