amos the prophet
When deciding upon a prophet to use for this project, I wanted to choose one that I thought not many others would choose while at the same time find one who I thought I could relate with. I decided to choose Amos. Amos was set to save the poor and who wouldn't want to learn about a man named Amos. The book of Amos is made up of three parts. In the first part, which includes the first two chapters, there is a general title of the work along with the name of the author and the general date of his ministry. Also as explained in the Catholic Encyclopedia, "The first two chapters are made up of a series of oracles against, Damascus, Gaza, Tyre, Edom, Ammon, Moab, Judah, and finally Israel."(Cath Ency 435). In the words of the Catholic Biblical Encyclopedia (note that the Catholic Biblical Encyclopedia, and the Catholic Encyclopedia are different works), this meant that in these chapters God declares that the first six nations listed will be punished for their wickedness, and Israel will be driven into exile because of it's immortality, luxury and idolatry. (p. 62)In the second part of Amos comes the judgment and sentence upon Israel. Finally in the third section come the five visions of the future judgment.
In the last vision, it shows the lord standing next to the altar threatening the Northern Kingdom with chastisement to which there is no escape. Amos was a herdsman in a small village in the Southern Kingdom called Thecua, 12 miles from Jerusalem. To add to the harshness of Amos' message, the Northern kingdom was flourishing and at one of it's best times ever. "(Cath Ency 436) Above e!xplains how yes, a majority of the people of Israel were doing what they thought to be spectacular but at the same time the poor were being oppressed, and there was major morally wrong things going on socially. At least that is what they had believed. It is true that public morals had gradually been infected by the vices, which continued success and plenty too often bring in their train. Amos had not yet gone to the schools where young men go to train for a prophet's career, or even "entered upon the prophetical office" (cath encyc 435). The book finishes up with God's promise of the restoration of the house of David and the wonderful prosperity of the purified nation. , Mayfield Publishing Company ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. If one was to look at whether or not Amos would be p=leased with our way of life I believe that we would have many points to which he would appreciate, but at the same time I believe there are a lot of things that would really upset him. Social corruption and the oppression of the poor and helpless were very prevalent. com) According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, "Amos was not a wealthy man, Thecua was apparently a shepard's town, and it was while following his flock in the wilderness of Judah, that, in the reigns of Ozias and Jeroboam, God called him for a special mission": "Go prophesy to my people Israel"(vii, 15). The third vision is that of a plumb- line, where the destruction is to become complete.
