Comparison
Comparison between 'Remember' and 'Reported Missing' I will be making comparison between two poems, 'Remember' by Christina Rossetti and 'Reported Missing' by Bary Cole. I will be comparing their similarities and differences in the way that they treat their subject matter and also how the poems are written. 'Reported Missing' seems to be a very modern poem, as it was written by a contemporary poet Barry Cole who write poems for the 21st century.'Reported Missing appears to be a poem about a man who is searching for a person whom he is very close to 'Closer then I am to Anyone at present'. This is what he told the police man when he was questioned about his relationship. He gives his report to the police man with a very vague description of her 'what about her eyes? There were two'. His answers are often comical but yet on the other hand rather romantic 'are you implying Violence was used? Only the gentle Hammer blow of her kisses' He gives a vivid description of feelings he has for this missing person. However throughout the entire poem he was unable to give the police man any distinct or detailed descriptions about her. Although there seems to be some evidence that indicate he was very close to this person 'Her lips
The tone and atmosphere which is created is of sadness and pain 'Remember me when I am gone away, Gone far into the silent land; When you can no more hold me by my hand' Here she also uses a metaphor 'silent land' which refers to her destination after her death. Christina Rossetti writes her poems in a traditional style, Rhyme scheme, Repetition, alliteration and a sonnet. The repetition of the word 'Remember' occurs throughout the poem. 'Remember' Seems to be very personal and touching piece, whereas 'Reported Missing' is more informative. The atmosphere in this poem seems quite tense and formal which is also created by the way the poem is structured. ' He does not even know the colour of her hair. It appears to be about a person whose death is inevitable 'It will be to late to counsel then or pray. 'Remember' seems to have been written in the 20th century, which is revealed by the name of the author Christina Rossetti. The author has also taken on a role of a person facing her death. This poem is in the form of a sonnet therefore short but yet gives a very vivid description of the subject matter. In 'Remember' we read how a person will be separated though her death and in Barry Cole's poem the person has been separated though the other being missing. This poem is also a first person writing but is not directed at the reader, but to another person within the poem.
