Macbeth

             In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, the theme of appearance versus reality was very relevant and important throughout the entire play. The theme relates to many of the characters in the play. They seem like truthful, trustworthy people, but really most of them are conniving and deceitful people. The appearance of a person is sort of like a first impression or a judgment of a person. On the other hand the reality of a person is the actual person or meaning of the person. Shakespeare uses this theme of appearance versus reality in many of his plays to prove the audience's first impression of characters wrong, and to keep the audience on the edge of their seat.
             Macbeth, the main character of the play, is a very good example of the theme throughout the entire play. Macbeth's appearance is that he is one of King Duncan's most loyal generals and that he is a very truthful man. The reality of the situation is that Macbeth wants more than anything to be the king of Scotland, and he is willing to do anything to gain the prestigious title. Therefore, Macbeth kills King Duncan one night in order to become king and now proceeds to kill anyone else that tries to threaten his title of king of Scotland. Also Macbeth's wife, Lady Macbeth, is a very corrupted character in the play. She appears to be a beautiful, innocent wife of a truthful man, but the reality is that Lady Macbeth was the root of all corruption, and she is more eager to gain the kingship than Macbeth himself is ready for the title.
             Another important character in the play, which exemplifies the theme of appearance versus reality is Macduff, one of King Duncan's generals. Macduff's appearance after Duncan was murdered was that he did not blame Macbeth, and he wished Macbeth luck in his kingship.
