In Shakespeare's play, Macbeth, the theme of appearance versus reality was very relevant and important throughout the entire play. The theme relates to many of the characters in the play. They seem like truthful, trustworthy people, but really most of them are conniving and deceitful people. The appearance of a person is sort of like a first impression or a judgment of a person. On the other hand the reality of a person is the actual person or meaning of the person. Shakespeare uses this theme of appearance versus reality in many of his plays to prove the audience's first impression of characters wrong, and to keep the audience on the edge of their seat. Macbeth, the main character of the play, is a very good example of the theme throughout the entire play. Macduff's appearance after Duncan was murdered was that he did not blame Macbeth, and he wished Macbeth luck in his kingship. The reality of the situation is that Macbeth killed King Duncan because he knew that Malcolm and Donalbain would flee the country and he would become king. Shakespeare uses the theme to get across the point of everyone is not who they seem to be, or as the phrase goes, "don't judge a book by its cover. These are King Duncan's sons, and once King Duncan was murdered everyone assumed that his children did it because they were the only one's with anything to gain by the killing.
