             Burgess has an effective way of setting the tone with his use of NADSAT. It is a language the Burgess invented for the novel, which is a concoction of traditional Russian and some British slang (Petix 27). This is the language of Alex and his "droogs". The word NADSAT is the Russian suffix for "teen," as in "sixteen." He use of symbolism is also highly effective. Even the title "A Clockwork Orange" is symbolic of an "organism lovely with color and juice but [that] is in fact only a clockwork toy to be wound up by God or the Devil" (Burgess ix). Burgess also employs a creative way of sequencing the chapters in the book, dividing it into three parts, and each section symbolic of a different stage in Alex's life. In A Clockwork Orange, Anthony Burgess masterfully uses a clever sequencing of the chapters, the NADSAT dialect, and symbolism to show a grim dystopian futuristic society.
             The way Burgess sets up the chapters is a very important aspect of the novel. The book is set-up in three different sections, each containing seven chapters, each depicting a different stage in Alex's life. The literary style for this type of pattern could be classified as "ABA", with the first and third parts repeating a common motif, while part two deals with a different subject. Parts one and three are set on the mean city streets while part two takes place while Alex is incarcerated in prison. This type of setup helps Burgess convey all of Alex's trials and tribulations throughout his life.
