Black holes? I know what you are thinking. Something black in space that sucks you in and you can never get out. Even though that is basically true, there is a lot more to it than that. Black holes are the mysterious dark regions of the universe. A black hole is an area of space made up of extremely dense matter in which everything is pulled in, and nothing, not even light, the fastest thing, in the universe can escape. The theory that black holes might actually exist became more common after the 1930's when Einstein gave his theory of general relativity with mathematical formulas. A man named John Wheeler was the one to come up with the name "black hole". Before that, black holes were called "frozen "stars" because of the supposed image of an object entering a black hole would appear to freeze at the edge, even though the object already entered the black hole. Inside of a black hole the intensity of its gravity distorts space and time. For example, the radius of a black hole, with the mass of approximately ten suns, would only be thirty kilometers. The theory basically states that it is impossible to travel faster than light and so it shows that inside a black hole nothing can escape the black hole because to get out an object would have to travel faster than the speed of light. One of the most commonly used theories is Einstein's theory of general relativity. The event horizon is basically the place where there is no turning back. A black hole has a collection of mass whose gravity is strong that everything that passes the event horizon is pulled in. Black holes have a gravitational field called an event horizon. At the end of a star's life, a supernova may occur that is so strong that the star itself is blown apart. Black holes are formed from the remains of supernovas, the explosion of energy of a supergiant star. For example, if you were in a space ship, capable of going the speed of light, went past the event horizon, you wouldn't be ale to come back out, even at the speed of light. With the radius of a mass equal to 100 million suns would be three million suns. The distortions can produce very strange results. In this region gravity is so strong that it tugs at space and time, slowing down time and stretching out space. So in order to escape a black hole you would have to be traveling faster than the speed of light, which is impossible according to Einstein's theory of general relativity.
