Liberty

What exactly does liberty mean? Well, to me it can mean a number of things. First of all, it can mean acting in whatever way you see fit for satisfying your own interests, desires and expectations to the extent that you don't infringe upon the very same liberties of the others. Secondly, liberty means independence and freedom from physical restraint or external force, and our basic rights that the government cannot take away or interfere with. It is also a concept that protects all individuals, frees man and constrains the state. I think that liberty gives equal rights to all men and that they should have the same potential to do things. Through liberty, no one should be discriminated for their race, beliefs, or ideas. I strongly believe that all men are equal because we were created the same by God. I also believe that man is mostly good and those that aren't, can be reformed. Change should be brought about that is good for the community it is for and should be decided by the people themselves, not the government. People should have more freedom to govern themselves and the government should interfere less to prevent a clash of different ideas. If people should govern themselves they are controlling their own lives, and

Mill define liberty? In his book "On Liberty", he defines liberty in relation to three spheres. People possess rights not to be used for broad social ends without their consent. I also agree with him in his view on the purpose of the government. The final sphere of Mill's definition of liberty is a combination of the first two (Mill 13). I believe the government's purpose is to take care of federal and international policies while leaving the commonwealth of the people for the people. The second sphere of Mill's definition encompasses the general freedoms which allow an individual to freely peruse a ". This nullifies any freedoms or rights individuals are said to have because they subject to the whims and fancy of the state. These limits are determined by the law in the same way that land boundaries are marked by stakes. However, it should not be in complete control. First off, both Marx and Mill believe that there are positive and negative liberties given to us. So in terms of positive and negative liberty, both Marx and Mill agree that the positive liberties should be focused on more than the negative, which I happen to agree with completely.
