It's been said that Citizen Kane is the best film ever made. Though, withoutknowing much about filmmaking and different techniques, one can never get the full valueof it. Understanding the setting, light use, depth of frame, and basic composition makeCitizen Kane all the more better and great of a film. It is essential to take notice of these When deciding which of the four parts of the film to analyze, I came to theconclusion that the lighting and shadows are one of the most interesting and importantfactors in the film, not only because the film is in black and white but also because itcontributed significantly to the description during the film. Perhaps more than the other The film itself was very clean and smoothly edited. Both high key and low keylighting techniques were used throughout the film, I believe to show the different feelingof each scene. I found there to be times when there was a significant use of the differentfill lights used to emphasize close up shots of the character's faces. It seemed to bring them together, as well as,the audience being brought in more on the happiness they were sharing. Scenes such as the thematic montage betweenSuzan's operatic appearance and the different newspapers, this was a big time in the life ofSuzan and Charles Kane. I remember trying to make my little sisters laugh and be happy by doing thosesame types of things. Kane is simply searching for really love. He finds it easily in himself but has a hardtime expressing his love for others. Shadows were used mainly to keepinformation in the scene by highlighting the dominate part and make it more obviouswithout losing sight of what the shadows are doing or their purpose. Lighting and shadows were an essential part of this film. At the end,when we saw Suzan in the nightclub after Kane's death, the room was fairly well lit, and,all of a sudden, the sun came. This helpsus to decipher what is truly going on in the mass confusion of life for these characters. The most emotion I got from the combination of these two elements was whenKane goes back to the paper building only to find his workers gossiping and Leland passedout in his office. The combination of the lights and shadows together was used to portray intrinsicinterest. The film left me with a sense of sadness in the fact that he never got toexpress his love or emotion to those he really did care about. Though, at a glance, the scene itself seems simple, it held a lot moreemotion and information that is not so obvious. There are, to me, theadjectives of this film. Light was needed in this movie primarily to show emotion.
