Alexander Hamilton

Alexander Hamilton was not born in America but during its founding he helped set it on the course to becoming the world power it is today. As a lawyer he argued many cases and helped establish precedents on certain issues. In his most important role as the country's first secretary of the treasury he created the governments financial system and helped get a burgeoning country on its feet. Alexander Hamilton was born 1757 on the island of Nevis in the British West Indies. His family moved to the island of St. Croix in 1765 and a year later his father left Alexander and his mother. At the age of nine Hamilton went to work as a clerk in Christiansted, the main city on the island. The merchant Hamilton clerked for, Nicholas Cruger, would be a great help to him. At the age of fifteen and with the aid of Cruger Hamilton was sent to go to school in New York. After catching up on his academics Hamilton spoke with Dr. John Witherspoon, the President of Princeton. It was decide there that another convention would be called to meet in Philadelphia in May of 1787with the purpose being to adjust the current federal system. Even before there was a National Supreme Court Hamilton was already arguing for judicial review. He helped the government establish credit and turned America into a cash economy. After the ratification of the constitution Hamilton was chosen by the newly inaugurated President Washington to be the Secretary of the Treasury. He served in congress for only eight months during which he wrote a series of articles explaining that the current government was weak mainly because of a lack of money and the inability to get any money out of the states. Hamilton did not feel that he was entitled to cast a vote for his state all by himself so he continued on as a nonvoting member and was the only New Yorker to sign. " This report was in response to a request from the house that he devise a plan to make the United States independent of other nations for military supplies. Through the founding of the National Bank not only did he improve the country's financial status but he also provided a topic for debate concerning what powers were really given to the central government. If the federal government were to assume these remaining debts states which had already paid their debts would be mad. He was turned down but made the same proposal to Kings College (now Columbia University) and they ag!reed. Hamilton missed and was struck in the stomach by Burr's shot. After the war New York chose Hamilton as a delegate to congress. He convinced Senator Robert Morris to help him round up votes in return for pushing that Pennsylvania be chosen as the permanent site for the capital. Hamilton's last major project as the Secretary of the Treasury was the writing of a report titled, "In support of Manufacturing.
