Opposition to Thoreau's position on "News"
             The significance of news is great in our life and economy today. Thoreau describes news as gossip in his book Walden, but it is educating and important in the American society. It gives us updates on events that affect our lives. In a society today, there are hardly any people who does not listen to any form of news such as reading magazines, listening to the radio, and also watching television. News is incorrectly described in Walden; Thoreau gives an opinion on what he thinks about it. He describes news as gossip edited by women over their tea. In the American society, news is important to almost everyone. It affects people daily by giving information on weather, business, and government, including other political and social issues.
             News is a beneficial source in any society of this world. It gives us education and updates in events and happenings. In Thoreau's life, a newspaper may not be useful because Thoreau lives separate from other people of the materialistic world. In this world, for the reason of many advances, news is needed to have competition. Competition is what our economy is based on. It can also be useful for a man who lives much like Thoreau. For example, when a contagious disease spread throughout a community, it would not be gossip to warn others by stating it in a newspaper. It helps people to be careful of the disease and stay caution of it. Thoreau bases his opinions about news in Walden. It is not the news that is gossip, but the people who write them into a gossip. In a newspaper, it can be written that a person went to jail for a murder he committed and the article would follow up with a factual story stating both sides. News appears to be little more than gossip when the writers !
             state one side of the story rather than stating both sides of it. This influences readers to be bias and newspapers will seem nothing more but a chatty talk.
