sami
The Sami population is populated in a broad belt going over north of Norway, Sweden and Finland, there are also some Sami populated in Russia. The largest part of them live in Norway, there are several different estimates but according to the latest numbers in a Norwegian newspaper it is around 25000 Sami living in Norway (the same week the British newspaper Guardian weekly estimated it to be 50000, the double) anyhow there is a lot of confusion concerning the Sami people also in Norway, for instance its often assumed that all Sami are making a living of reindeer up north in Norway. That is not the case; there are mainly three groups forestsami, seasami and the reindeer (tundrasami) in Norway these are separate groups with own languages (there are 9 different languages existing, in fact these are called dialects in the establishment in Scandinavia but the differences are in fact larger than between Norwegian and Swedish whish are regarded as separate languages), furthermore a !larger part is populated in Oslo the capital, (referred to as the largest Sami colony by themselves, jokingly) The Sami was the first ethnic group populating Norway and can be called the native Norwegians similarly to America's Indians or
In the northern parts the old prejudices are still living and Sami are being looked down on. It's because of still living prejudices and jokes about Sami very though to be young and Sami and many take the easiest way; to become a Norwegian. This should give them a larger degree of self-governing and also more concrete property rights. The! area is in the middle of Finnmark, and Sami is not going g to be stepped on once more (without a fight that is). During a long and hard struggle, they slowly gained some rights gradually during the seventies and up till today. This would put grassing fields and traditional campsites under water. Although they only have advising authority in issues relating to Sami, it is a public organ which opinion cannot be so easily ignored as NGO's. But when it comes to important natural resources, profit interested politicians are hard to move. ILO has led to some important trials where Samis have claimed their rights according to the convention, however also here the establishment's ignorance displays itself. In many cases their ethnic belonging were deleted. Pulled out of your background alone among only Norwegians, you try to survive; claiming respect for your ethnicity is hardly to be expected. These prejudices are still living to some degree, but I think there are two important features to be considered. Firstly there is a geographical distinction to be made, in southern parts of Norway there exists a huge ignorance, Samis exist for them only as people wearing colourful clothes and riding reindeers, however most probably they in some way or another know a Sami but are simply unaware of it.
