Life Magazine

             In the March 19, 1971 edition of Life Magazine, a central theme seems to be mysteriously lurking in most articles and advertisements. For as long as man can remember money has been a reason to live and reason to die. In these times, money is more powerful than ever, creating controversy and many questions about the present and future. Through several articles and advertisements, one will be able to see both, money is the rule and law of this period and that the issue shows debatable evidence on the future in both directions.
             Money as defined by the American Heritage Dictionary is best summed up by "a commodity, such as gold, or an officially issued coin or paper note that is legally established as an exchangeable equivalent of all other commodities, such as goods and services, and is used as a measure of their comparative values on the market."
             As one was to flip though the issue on March 19, 1971, one would notice a large selection of advertisements scattered throughout the magazine that are, of course, selling something. In this particular issue, the advertisements show many luxury items, such as, cars, diamonds, and air conditioners. One could deduce that the society is prosperous; that money must be flowing at a high rate, and that the economy is grand. And, in relating to ads, this seems to be the case.
             The first advertisement is an ad for Carrier, a central air conditioning company, (2). First of all, the idea of central air conditioning in the 1970's must surely translate into a luxury item. Even in today's society, in all of our high-tech knowledge, not everyone can afford to put in a central air system. This evidence points to the society as being profitable and great key in showing that the market must be doing well.
