Treaty of Versailles
World War I ended on November 11, 1918, and the Treaty of Versailles was written soon after. The Treaty of Versailles, often known as the Peace Treaty, marked the beginning of a great period of poverty in Germany. The diplomats attending the Versailles Peace Conference intended to draft a general peace treaty to end the state of war and to redraw the map of Europe. To represent the United States at the Peace Conference was Woodrow Wilson. Representing the United Kingdom was David Lloyd George. France was represented by George Clemenceau. These three people were referred to as the 'Big Three.'1 Italy's role was quite limited. Other leaders of other nations came to this grand meeting in Versailles that is located near Paris, France.By November 11, when the truce that marked the end of the war was signed, eight million soldiers lay dead; twenty million more were mutilated, or spitting blood from the gas attacks. At the end of World War I, twenty-two million civilians had been killed or wounded. By the end of the war, four mighty empires, the German, the Austro-Hungarian, the Turkish, and the Ottoman, had fallen.2 The leaders of the many nations led by the 'Big Three' labored for six months, from January to June of 1919.
4Clemenceau aimed for the security of France. 12On June 28, the Treaty of Versailles was signed. Germany would never be able to satisfy all the treaty obligations; the French would be entitled to occupy the Rhineland forever. He was considered by the English and the Americans as an individual filled with a sense of rage and vengeance, determined to crush Germany. On January 11, 1923, French and Belgian troops moved in to occupy the Ruhr district. The German military was reduced to such proportions that the Germans would not even be able to maintain internal order. It caused Germany to pay a large sum of money, drastically slash Germany's military into a tiny number of soldiers, and caused Germany to give up exports, land, and industrial products. 9In addition to reparations made in currency, Germany had to cut their military and give precious land and resources. It caused a great German slum which led Adolf Hitler to come to power in Germany. Also, Germany was reduced in population by six and a half million. Under the circumstances, there could be no way for Germany to revive its industry said the representative of Germany.
