Saddam Hussein

             Oil plays an important role in the lives of Americans. In its crude form it is near useless to the average American, but after it has been refined into gasoline, oil is something they cannot live without. It is used to power planes, boats, trucks, and automobiles. However, over the past years the price of gasoline has significantly increased, causing the people to question the government's competency in regulating gas prices. In turn, the government relays the blame of the people to a money greedy Middle Eastern leader, Saddam Hussein. In Western society he is notorious for his harsh punishments and the invasion of Kuwait. Operation Desert Storm can easily be credited to Hussein alone. The public is constantly reminded of his uncompromising disposition of oil prices and nuclear weapons in newspapers, magazines, and television broadcasts. In Iraq, he has all but established a dictatorship for himself. Yet, few Westerners realize that Saddam Hussein is not an immoral, !
             power hungry oppressor, but rather a wise and great leader.
             In the early nineties, the United Nations placed Iraq under severe sanctions. The sanctions caused a great deal of pain in Iraq. It was nearly impossible to import food, industrial machinery, spare parts, and medicine. The country once had the best healthcare in the Middle East. But as a result of the sanctions, it plummeted to nearly nothing, leaving the people of Iraq to suffer from communicable diseases and cancer. Like all cancers, leukemia is fatal, even in countries with an excellent healthcare system. In the United States, only eighty percent of children with leukemia survive; in Iraq, there is no cure. The healthcare equipment needed to treat the leukemia patients is on the U.N. sanction's prohibited list.
