Roger Chillingworth
Nathaniel Hawthorn, the author of the Scarlet Letter, uses symbolism to show points and emphasize morals throughout the story. He uses his characters as his main tool to show symbolism in the story, and one of the better examples of this symbolism is Roger Chillingworth, or otherwise known as Roger Prynne. The author uses Chillingworth to show how hate can consumes us all and the consequences of letting this happen. Chillingworth also represents the destructive and self destructive powers of vengeance, as well as the innate evil people can let into their lives. For Hawthorn, Chillingworth is a useful and effective tool used to show the good and very bad sides of people. Chillingworth's physical appearance fits his personally very well. He is first described as having a small stature and a furrowed visage. These features make it almost impossible for the reader to det
As a result of this, he had to walk with a cane and often limped. He had a very intelligent look about him that made the reader assume that of all his years of study and pursuit of knowledge, he could shape himself inside, but not out. Chillingworth's voice was said to be deep, and his face we hidden behind a large beard with the look of a demon about it. This overwhelming amount of evil inside of him would eventually cause him to have a lonely death away from all of those he knew. One of his shoulders was deformed and rose higher than the other. Locked in a stale mate, Chillingworth could not let Dimmsdale know that he is the real husband of Hester. His heart was said to be capable of love and had room in it to accommodate many guests. The demon inside of him would drive him to seek horrible vengeance on the man that sinned against him and his community. As a result he would see the A every day and be reminded of his mission in the colony. As time went on his heart got colder and darker. In the small colony that the characters lived in, it was most likely hard to avoid a certain person. Chillingworth probably saw Hester every day in the street or in a store. In response to this act of pure loathing toward Hester and Dimmsdale, Hester threatened to tell Dimmsdale the truth about Chillingworth and that he was her real husband.
