Money, power and respect as they say, are the key to life. In the book "Middle Passage," it not only talks of the hardship of slaves, but also the corruption of people. John Locke believed that people were not born corrupt, but instead the society that made them that way. People become corrupt because of a variety of reasons: wealth, greed, jealousy, power, respect, and so much more. Some people will risk anything, their friendship, love, and family, to either gain power and respect or to keep it. Throughout history, people have abused the powers that they obtain, like when there were kings and monarchs. They used these powers to hurt their subjects, and as they bring pleasure to themselves only, they become brutal and violent and flaunt their powers to gain more. Once power is gained it is intuition to want to have more, but if people can see what trouble and pain they can cause in doing so, people will change and maybe, just maybe we'll be a little closer to a perfec! In the story, Charles Johnson shows these inborn human traits through his characters as the story goes along. People are blinded by their own lust for wealth and power that they don't realize the good things in life. This is just an example of what has happened and goes on in the rest of the world. His treatment towards his crew and slaves became too much to bear so it caused a rebellion. A leader or captain should be respected and honored much like the president that we elect, they are what keeps unity and prevents mutiny. Little did he know that he has just chosen the "middle passage" in his journey of life. Learn to enjoy the things around and don't rush through life or get too caught up on one thing. Those with a strong will and a good heart will survive, and those who are weak will suffer. As being captain he abuses his power of authority causing pain to others and receive pleasure to ease his lonely and uneasy heart. Like during the time of aristocracy, powers were misused and people mistreated. And always remember the golden rule which were probably what slaves wanted to tell their masters and that is to treat others as you want others to treat you. He now longs to have the warmth and security of a loving family. His greed becoming so horrific that it became his biggest concern. He thinks he will loose all his freedom if he is tied down to marriage and a family. At one point in life, everyone will have to take their journey and walk their paths. " After his long journey through life on the Republic, Rutherford has changed from a man living a apathetic life and is constantly wandering from place to place to a man who longs for the life he was escaping from originally.
