the inferno
The Christian theology states that for a man to be properly castigated, his crime must determine the punishment that he endures. "...a man will always reap just the kind of crop he sows!"(Galatians 6:7-8) Dante's Inferno shows that for whatever crime man has committed, he was suffer a literal punishment for the act. "For others will treat you as you treat them." (Matthew 7:1-2) The first people Dante encounters in hell are living in Limbo, a place between earth and Hell. These people have committed the sins of cowardice or indifference in life. "I know you well-you are neither hot nor cold; I wish you were one or the other! But since you are merely lukewarm, I will spit you out of my mouth!"(Revelation 3:15) God did not accept people's apathy. These souls were afraid to speak up in their lives, and for that, they are punished. "...their bare skin galled by wasps and fl
These people have committed sins of incontinence. All of the souls in Limbo were accused of living their lives not according to God's laws; thus they can never see God and re constantly ambushed by their fears. Ugolino, in Hell, is forced to gnaw at the back of Ruggieri's head for all of eternity. Ruggieri's cruelty lead Ugolino to his disgusting cannibalistic act, therefore he is victim of this act in Hell. ------------------------------------------------------------------------**Bibliography**. Over time, his hunger forced him to eat his children for survival. "These souls in Limbo are punished only in that they may never know God or see His truth. Because in life, they could not think morally and justly keep their hands apart from each other, they are now being punished for their lustful desires. " (Canto V Ln29-30) Their sin is that of non-restraint and free spirit. Because he eats his children, his punishment almost pokes fun at his desperation, by having him constantly eating another human being. If the idea implied was to punish people precisely according to the crime, then the Inferno truly serves justice. For being a traitor to his country, Ugolino is sent to Hell and for his cruelty, Ruggieri is also sent to Hell. Throughout the Inferno, people are seen literally living out their fears and desires even to the point of insanity.
