Legalizing Marijuana
A vast majority of this country's population refuses to accept the U.S. bureaucratic decision to prohibit its citizens from enjoying the benefits that this organically grown herb provides. There is countrywide support lobbying for reinstating the right to use this natural product. Although marijuana is a drug that is illegal in the United States, volumes of research have been published in favor of legalizing marijuana. Although some people feel that legalizing marijuana would increase the amount of drug use, marijuana should be legalized because it will reduce the great amount of money spent on enforcement, increase our country's revenue and lessen crime, and it will also be useful in treating certain medical conditions. 'Currently, since the harvesting of marijuana is illegal in the United States, we import hemp products from other countries instead of making the products ourselves' (Cohen136). If it is legalized, the government could generate revenue through taxes by controlling this organically grown substance. Their studies have shown that prolonged use of marijuana causes lack of ingenuity, severe bronchitis, and it lessens reaction speed. Legalizing alcohol did not increase alcoholism, so why would legalizing drugs elevate drug abuse? We have a right to decide for ourselves what we do in the privacy of our own home with regard to marijuana. Alcohol has been named for hundreds of thousands of deaths in the United States. Approximately three-fourths of this money goes toward enforcing laws against the suppliers of marijuana' (Cohen83). Marijuana is only psychologically addictive and use of it can be stopped easier than alcohol abuse.
